Spinner

yarn on spindle

Our current spinning objective is to produce an even yarn at around 5-6NM (35WPI, 10 Lea). We believe that a yarn with these specifications is extremely versatile, and can be used for all sorts of products, from clothing, to accessories to home furnishings. We are looking to develop a reliable, easy to use, farm-scale spinning machine that can add value to locally grown flax.

Our spinning technology is based on the approach known as “gill-spinning”. This means we dry spin straight from the gill drawing frame. This simplifies the process as it avoids the need for creating roving. Historically, gill spinning frames could spin up to 16 Lea. Our machines combine the actions of spreading, drawing and spinning into one modular frame. You can swap out different elements to adjust the machine for each stage.

The spinning machine is currently under very active development. We soon hope to finish work on a screw driven gill box which should result in a big improvement in the reliability of the machine and the evenness of the yarn.
